EDPC has been retired. See my new blog http://ReportMode.com

(Indexed 2010-09-22):

To all,THANK YOUThank you for visiting this blog over the years. As the original Evil Doctor Porkchop on the web, it's hard to believe that this blog has been around so long. With the release of Toy Story 3, the Evil Doctor went mainstreamwith the opening sceneand now there are now a lot of Evil Doctors out there on the Internet. I will miss people walking up to me at conferences and asking if I'm the Evil Doctor. Knowing that people got value from this effort via the emails and comments receive...(truncated)...

To all that have written and visited in the past months, I thank you for stopping by. I've been basically ignoring this blog due to other projects. As I'm now a bus commuter, hopefully I can use that time to do better care and feeding of this blog. On to the letters.... LETTER #1 I just read your blog entry on leveraging custom fields in Project Server 2003 and I hope you can give me some advice. Latest Happenings

(Indexed 2007-03-11):

It's been awhile since I've been on this blog. It feels a little like walking into a relative's house that you haven't visited in a while. You know where everything is, but it still feels a bit strange. As you may know, I took over management of the Project Server Team Blog a few months ago. From a blogging perspective, this has been a challenging assignment. It's one thing to blog on your own blog, where you can pretty much do whatever. It's another matter when you are representing the team. Ov...(truncated)...

Resource Plans are good for Regular Projects too!

(Indexed 2006-09-12):

After reviewing previous posts, it's pretty easy to draw the conclusion that resource plans can only be used for activity plans. Not so! You can also use them with regular project plans. The usage there was envisioned as a way of supporting rolling wave planning. By attaching a resource plan to a regular project, you can claim your resources for six months while doing detailed project planning a month at a time. Using Activity Plans/Resource Plans for Managing Operational Resources

(Indexed 2006-09-11):

While I'msitting here waiting for the doctor (who has free Wifi!), I thought I would write more about Activity Plans and Resource Plans. If you have the following scenario, you can use Activity Plans and Resource Plans to manage resource availability. This technique also takes advantage of the fact that project duration and resource allocation timeframes are no longer strongly bound. Scenario You are the manager ofa support team whose team members also work on projects. You want to reserve 50% ...(truncated)...

Status Manager vs Assignment Owner

(Indexed 2006-09-07):

We are getting quite a number of questions regarding what is the difference between Status Manager and Assignment Owner in Project Server 2007. Status Manager Status Manager is the person who manages the task andprocesses the status updates for a task (which is typically also the Project Owner). By default, the Status Manager is the same as the Project Owner. In Project 2003, you had to implicitly become the Status Manager by opening the Project Plan, selecting the specific tasks, then republis...(truncated)...

Activity Plans and Resource Plans

(Indexed 2006-09-07):

Another question has come up around the 100% allocation to tasks in Activity Plans. Basically, how are you supposed to be doing things in parallel and still show accurate availability? The Activity Plan feature was intended to provide a lightweight task management facility which would integrate with Project Server and would take advantage of Project Server features. The intended target user, the incidental project manager, typically isn't formally trained in Project Management andalso typically ...(truncated)...

Why blogging is like going to the gym

(Indexed 2006-07-25):

[Sigh.] It's been a while since i"ve written something productive here. As I'm discovering, blogging is like going to the gym. You like going, you get really gung ho about it for awhile and then.... Something happens and you don't get to it. You know, oh, I'll post tonight and it never happens. So, I'm posting something. Took the Vista Plunge

(Indexed 2006-07-10):

As I'm getting back into the swing of things, I went ahead and updated my Tablet and one of my servers to Vista. My tablet is sacred as that's where I actually get my work done. Everything else is a test bed. XP was acting a little flaky after I had loaded some alpha version software so I was going to have to rebuild the tablet anyway. So, XP or Vista? We have an internal email list where people post Vista questions. I had been monitoring to get a sense of the discussions. As the discussions seem ...(truncated)...

Back in the saddle soon

(Indexed 2006-07-09):

I was just reviewing all of the project blogs when I saw Jack Dahlgren's post on Project Management takes a Summer Vacation. I agree it has been quiet and there's a reason, at least as far as this blog and the Project Blog are concerned. A significant number of the Project program managers (including me) are in the middle of housing moves. It makes it hard to write when you are surrounded by boxes. Good Intentions and Bad Installations

(Indexed 2006-06-09):

I had good intentions of writing a killer post on managing administrative time in Project 2007. However, something happened on the way to setting up my server. While I've installed P2007 about 20 times already, I managed to get off the beaten path in the install instructions and provisioned PWA incorrectly as a result. I screwed it uproyally as the only way I could get PWA to appear was to specify some port number after the server name. Everything I tried to fix it just made it worse. Now, it wo...(truncated)...

(Indexed 2006-06-04):

I know I usually post on Project Server but the stuff being proposed by my government is just utterly infuriating. Isn't this the sort of thing we are supposed to be fighting against in other areas of the world? Are we so afraid that we are willing to sacrifice our freedoms so easily? I wish more people in Washington DCwere asking these questions. Ed Bott has a great post on this: http://www.edbott.com/weblog/?p=1354[Image][Image][Image]

Ad Hoc Work Revisited

(Indexed 2006-03-11):

If you were able to attend my presentation at Project Conference on Managing All Your Work using Project 12, my apologies! We had significant technical difficulties which made the demos less than effective. I've since re-recorded these demos for the DVD.The goal was to show four common scenarios we've found in managing work could be handled in Project. In the interest of adding value, I wanted to recap the scenarios so that you will get the full value out of what we did in Project 12. In this po...(truncated)...

Retake of my demo from conference

(Indexed 2006-03-08):

If you attended my session on managing all work at conference, my apologies! The session did not go exactly as planned as my demo tanked immediately. We re-recorded the demos yesterday where our wonderful AV pros will insert it into the finished presentation on the Conference DVD. It should be more useful this time. Also, I plan to post my script here so that you can try it out on your own. Stay tuned.project 2007 project 12 Office 2007 Office 12 Microsoft Project Management[Image][Image][Image]

Project 2007 Goodness for the Administrators too!

(Indexed 2006-02-28):

In previous versions, you may have added people as users to the Project Server even though they were not in the resource pool. Inevitably, they would become a resource and you, the Admin, would have to go enter in a lot of information into the Resource Pool to add them as a Resource. Now, Project 2007 makes it easier. If you have the above situation, all you need to do is:Go to Server Settings Select Manage Users[Image]Select the User Name>[Image]Check the first box labeled User can be assigned a...(truncated)...

Delegating work management in Project 12

(Indexed 2006-02-15):

Twoof my fellow PMswalked through this withmetoday and I almost fell out of my chair in my excitement. If you've ever attempted to manage a single large project with multiple project managers, you will find this very interesting. The whole time we were going through this, I was thinking of my old co-worker Doug, who had a project with 12 or so work teams. This would have been perfect for him.PROJECT 2002/2003As you may or may not know, in Project Server 2002/2003, there is a project owner and an ...(truncated)...

Project 12 Reporting Database

(Indexed 2006-01-23):

Im not sure how much Coverage the reporting database got during conference, but it is going to make life much easier. Basically, weve separated out a user focused copy of the data. Reporting on the data from the database in Project 2003 presented a number of challenges. In P12, the goal was to make it easier to develop reports. In the reporting database, we have data views around the major entities within Project Server. If you want a report where you report on projects and issues, you would bas...(truncated)...

I love this job

(Indexed 2006-01-19):

Being at Project Conference allows us to hear how people are using the product of our work in the "real world". We had a party this evening at Benaroya Hall in downtown where we had a retro band playing. I, of course, being one of the older members of the team, knew all the words to all of the songs. [Image] Being able to remember thewords forWord Up seems like such a waste of brain cells! It's all about the network.

(Indexed 2006-01-18):

As day 1 of conference comes to a close, it's been quite a day. There were all of the product announcements this morning followed by some great sessions in the afternoon. One of thebiggest benefits toProject Conference is all of the hallway networking that goes on. I've spent most of the afternoon talking to various attendees about their issues and how they were going to go about solving the problem. This interaction is a very valuableasset thatI've gotten out of this and the past conferences.The...(truncated)...

Keshav has been giving the overview of the work we have done on Project 12. Mike's keynote is just wrapping up

(Indexed 2006-01-17):

Mike Anguilo's keynote on the vision of Project 12 is wrapping up. He's outlined how we are going to allow you to manage ALL of your work in an intelligent fashion using Project 12. A couple of items got applause. Proposals and Operations work. New to Project 12, you will be able to manage project proposals in PWA and promote them into a full project when they become approved. You will also be able to manage ongoing operations work using the Operations Work screen. This allows you to designate r...(truncated)...

And so it begins...

(Indexed 2006-01-17):

Microsoft Office Project Conference 2006 is officially underway! Registration opened at 3pm and there's been a steady flow of people coming in to get their badges, program guideand goodie bags. One of the goodies is a cool PowerPoint clicker that has a built in laser. And we had to throw in the official Conference t-shirt to boot. Good stuff!I knew we were doing 80+ sessions but wow! I'm looking for which sessions I want to attend and it's really hard to pick. There are going to be so many good ...(truncated)...

In the Home Stretch

(Indexed 2006-01-05):

We are finally in the home stretch for Project Conference preparations. As part of the preparation, I've had to become familiar with Office 12 and Virtual Server 2005 R2. Both have been phenomenal. Of course, having a new Tablet PC with lots of RAM makes it easy to run the world on one machine. [Image] Having attended the previous two shows as a customer, I had no idea the amount of preparation that went into these conferences. We are getting into a lot of planning and coordination sessions...(truncated)...

Prepping for Project Conference

(Indexed 2005-12-14):

As I'm working on my Managing All Work with Project presentation for Project Conference, I'm wondering what kinds of work people have tried to manage with Project, but were unsuccessful doing. I've got 4 good scenarios from my Wachovia days, but I would be interested in other examples. If you have one, please post as a comment. If you haven't signed up yet, you better get a move on. The conference is almost sold out. Go to this link to signup. http://www.msprojectconference.com/ After Proje...(truncated)...

Rolling up current Project Phase info in Project Server

(Indexed 2005-10-06):

This post is a starter to enable you to rollup phase level information within a project to the project level. This enables you to view the information via PWA and to export it to Excel. This technique assumes you can represent your phase with Milestones. (Feasibility Phase milestone, etc.) Current phase is denoted by the in process milestone (first not completed milestone) In order to use this data in PWA, you have to put it in the Project Summary task. Even though the summary task is a t...(truncated)...

Leveraging custom fields in Project Server to enable custom reporting

(Indexed 2005-07-08):

Okay, for once I'm going to talk shop. For those of you who actually know who I am, I am a Microsoft Project Server 2003 SME. Having been involved in the original beta of Project 2002 and on the Project Customer Advisory Council for Project 200x, I'm a bit familiar with the tool. [Image] TODAY'S SPECIALToday shoppers, we are going to discuss when and how to use non-enterprise custom fields in Project Server Project Web Access views to enable custom reporting views. So, what's the problem and w...(truncated)...
